Grief and depression overlap, but they are not the same. Grief comes in waves with moments of relief. Depression flattens everything. Both deserve care.
There is no fixed timeline. Acute grief usually softens within 6–12 months, but waves can return for years. That is normal.
When symptoms persist beyond 6–12 months, include strong self-blame, or you cannot resume basic functioning, it may have crossed into depression and warrants treatment.
Sometimes. If sleep is severely disrupted, depression is severe, or functioning is impaired, medication can help you do the grief work.
